8 air-purifying plants for a healthy home

8 air-purifying plants for a healthy home

What's not to love about houseplants? They look great, they make our home environment more calm, relaxed and welcoming, and they are pretty nifty air purifiers, too.

'This is big news for city-dwellers because we spend more than 90 per cent of our time indoors,' says Freddie Blackett, founder of Patch, a bespoke online service helping to choose the best plants for novice gardeners.

'Toxic compounds from furnishings, upholstery, building materials and cleaning products all contribute to making indoor air quality less than squeaky clean,' Freddie continues. 'Indoor air pollution can also be caused by pollen, bacteria and moulds as outdoor air contaminants like car exhaust finds its way into buildings.'

So how can you purify the air in your home? Freddie reveals his top air-purifying plants from Patch:

Patch indoor plants

1. Pippa the peace lily is a calming presence in any home thanks to her soft dark-green foliage, year-round flowers and her ability to tolerate deep shade.

Removes: Ammonia, Benzene, Formaldehyde, Trichloroethylene

2. Bertie the boston fern has arching green fronds that will help transform any corner of your room into a peaceful sea of green. Put her in the steamiest spot you've got as she loves a humid atmosphere.

Removes: Formaldehyde, Xylene

3. Sharon the parlour palm has elegant, arched palm-fronds that are bound to get people talking. Originally from Mexico, this lady has been one of the most popular indoor plants since Victorian times.

Removes: Formaldehyde, Xylene, dust

4. Ben the weeping fig is a very popular houseplant. If given adequate love and attention, he can grow into a house 'tree'. Although he doesn't produce any flowers, his overall presence and elegance makes him a firm favourite.

Removes: Dust, Formaldehyde, Benzene and Trichloroethylene

5. Rapunzel the golden pothos is able to adapt and enhance almost any environment with her draping green and yellow heart-shaped locks. We recommend popping her on a bookshelf or using her as a privacy screen over a window.

Removes: Formaldehyde

6. Fleur the anthurium takes her floral name from her ability to be in flower for 300 out of 365 days of the year, which makes her the perfect plant to bring a splash of bright colour and warmth to your space.

Removes: Formaldehyde, Ammonia, Toluene, Xylene

7. Effy the English Ivy is a very rewarding indoor plant, helping to green up any space with her white and green marbled leaves. Her relaxed attitude to maintenance also means she'll forgive you for missing the odd watering.

Removes: Benzene, Carbon Monoxide, Formaldehyde, Trichloroethylene

8. Rick the corn plant is an impressive specimen who will, in return for just a little attention from time to time, happily show off to you his shiny, elegant leaves. If you're extremely lucky, he will even grow small, white flowers as well.

Removes: Benzene, Formaldehyde, Trichloroethylene, Xylene
