Succulents are a group of plants with thickened fleshy leaves and are adopted to arid desert life. Succulents store water in their leaves, their stems or their roots. These plants have adapted to survive arid conditions throughout the world, from Africa to the deserts of North America. Fortunately for us, this adaptive mechanism has resulted in an incredible variety of interesting leaf forms and plant shapes, including paddle leaves, tight rosettes, and bushy or trailing columns of teardrop leaves. Their strangeness makes them curiosities to both new amateur gardeners and also kids.

What is interesting is that these plants can also grow inside the home or office, and also in your garden, as long as they receive the required sufficient lighting and care, and also limited watering, in order for them to survive. Cacti are a subset of succulents, but in general, succulents usually do not have thorns.

Succulents are the perfect plant for very busy or even forgetful gardeners. Succulent care is easy as they have evolved with special water-storage tissues that allow them to survive in environments that are too dry for most other plants. And also, succulent gardens and terrariums can significantly brighten any indoor space. Succulent plants are always in style. With juicy leaves, stems, or roots, succulents form a vast and diverse group of plants, offering easy-care choices for your home. Plus, they look stunning planted alone, in groups or as companion plants. Most often, succulents are grouped in a pot in odd numbers like in 3’s, 5’s or 7’s.

There is a lot of color variation among succulents, which makes them very interesting. Color variations can be many shades of green, blue-green, pink, red, yellow, white, burgundy, some almost black, variegated, and more. The leaf shapes may be rounded, needle-like, berrylike, ruffled, or spiky. Many have an enticing “touch-me” quality – like that even of cacti.

Succulents like the dry humidity and warm conditions found in most homes, and while they like direct light, they can adapt to lower light. They all prefer a fast-draining potting medium that’s not watered too often. Allow the soil to dry out between watering, however, they need to be watered sufficiently afterwards. Usually, succulents are favorably grown outdoors, in the open sun, and watered sufficiently in between watering, and then brought inside the home to be displayed. However, in the rainy season, they have to be kept a location much drier or else they will rot.

Some of the popular succulents for home decorations includes the Burro’s Tail (Sedum), The Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) , Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii), Hens-and-Chicks (Echeveria elegans), Sabila (Aloe vera), Jade Plant (Crassula ovata), the Panda Plant (Kalanchoe tomentosa), Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata), the Agave and the Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata).

Grouping succulents in containers or in the outside garden are interesting projects. Succulent gardens are low maintenance and grouping smaller plants do really make great container gardens – as they can withstand heat, neglect, and direct sunlight. Succulents are some of the most rewarding plants for indoor gardeners. They’re tough, beautiful, and have interesting and varied foliage.

To start with, one may visit a garden center or garden shop offering various varieties of succulents. Choose a number of plants that will fit in your selected pot. One may ask the help of the plant seller in arranging plants in a tray pot, either made from plastic or clay. Plants are removed from their original polypropylene pots and are arranged in the selected tray pot, with the taller plants at the back and the smaller plants in front. After the plants are set on their desired arrangement, garden soil is added to fill in the gap or holes. You may also add pebbles or stones to cover the soil. Using your hand, you need to press through the soil to remove air spaces in between plants. After this, you now have a succulent garden that you can display in your home or office.
