In case you missed it—air purifying plants are now a thing.

As if clean eating wasn’t enough, Pinterest reports that the trend continues with searches for ‘air purifier’ and ‘air purifying plants’ up 270%.

Before you roll your eyes, think. NASA astronauts had the same problem. You spend up to 90% of your time indoors, often in stale or stagnant environments. Indoor air pollutants were ranked as one of the top five environmental risks to public health last year and build up of these pollutants in humans can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and sinus irritation.

BUT WHY AIR PURIFYING PLANTS?

Air pollutants can come from a wide range of things—cleaning products, upholstery, pollution and even pollen. If you work in a small or airless space, you’re at higher risk of exposure to these bad guys.

The easy way to avoid them? Introduce your own ventilation system—in the form of air purifying plants. Plants naturally purify air, and studies have shown that houseplants reduce the number of air particles in a room by absorbing nasty particles and processing them into oxygen.

What’s more, studies have found houseplants to ease anxiety, increase attentiveness, raise productivity and improve overall well being. In other words, having a green friend on your bedside table could be good for your mental health, as well as your physical.

In research conducted by NASA, Garden Mum, Spider Plant, Draceana, Ficus, Peace Lily and Aloe Vera plants were amongst the best for reducing air pollutants. The Garden Mum came out top, removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and xylene from indoor air.
