You have probably heard the hype by now that certain houseplants can help purify indoor air in your home. Here is our round up of the best options to go buy now.
Many people are surprised to find out that I don’t particularly have a green thumb. Having grown up with a florist mother and landscaper father you would not expect the gene to skip a generation, but I guess it has.
That being said, I am still a work in progress. And as I get older I find the desire to cultivate that green thumb more and more each year.
But things have not been smooth sailing, I practically killed my fern my mother gave me for Christmas and my husband had to take it to work to nurse it back to life.
But, I digress. I am still learning and still attempting to find my gardening gene. Especially since I dream of having a house full of plants and herbs.
But this article is not about that, maybe at a later date I will share my plant growing tips for other wannabes!
Today, we are talking about air purifying house plants.
I was first turned on to this idea when researching ways to help my hubby sleep better. Along with the almighty salt lamp, plants were also on that list of natural ways to get a better night’s rest.
For this reason, and many many others, we headed down to our local greenhouse to pick up a few to add to our ever growing jungle (or bungalow as I like to call it).
Aloe Vera
First up is our beloved aloe vera plant. You might recall we did a post on all the amazing health benefits of aloe, check it out HERE.
But we need to add purifying the air to that list.
Aloe plants are specifically known to clear out toxins like formaldehyde and benzene, which can accumulate from household cleaners.
Spider Plant
This is my kinda plant, it’s pretty hard to kill.
This plant is known for battling toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene.
The spider plant is also very easy to regrow. Just clip off one of the stems and place in water to sprout roots.
Red Edge Dracaena
This shrub can have quite the growth spurt, so make sure to give it some room to grow. But that only means more greenery to battle that air.
Red Edge Dracaena is known for clearing up pollutants like xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde.
English Ivy
This common plant has been said to clear out airborne fecal matter in your home and can filter out formaldehyde from house hold cleaners.
It can be very invasive, so they suggest keeping it in a pot in your home not in your flower beds or garden.
Bamboo Palm
I have yet to get my hands on one of these, put I am determined to find one here in Wisconsin.
This plant is on the top of most lists for helping remove toxins such as benzene and trichloroethylene. They suggest putting it near furniture to help balance out the pollutants coming from your couch.
Peace Lily
Another fairly easy plant to take care of, water and shade are all these plants need to survive and thrive.
It topped the charts with clearing up formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. They also bloom indoors showing off their signature white flowers.
Introducing some of these superhero plants to your home is a great way to help clean your air and help your health. They have been known to help you breath and sleep better, among many other things.
Not only do they promote health, I just love a house filled with beautiful greenery.
with love,
Jackie
