One of my favorite household DIYs are natural air fresheners. There’s nothing like giving your home a pleasant smell without the use of any toxic chemicals. If you’re anything like me, Febreze and other store bought air fresheners cause an instant headache. Below are just a few of the ways I keep my home smelling lovely:
1. Simmer Pots
- This method is so simple and my go-to after cooking something deliciously smelly (butter chicken smells delicious at dinner time - not so much the next morning). Fill a large pot with water and mix in a few of your favorite smell-goods. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and let simmer for as long as you’d like. You can continue to add water to the pot as needed to keep any ingredients from burning. You can try out different amounts and see what level of scent works for you! Some of my favorite combinations are:
- cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, vanilla extract
- lemon slices, rosemary sprigs
- dried rose petals, lavender essential oil
- orange & lemon peels, vanilla extract
2. Lavender Spray
- I use this method to keep bathrooms and closets smelling fresh. All you need is an 8oz spray bottle, distilled water, witch hazel, and essential oil of your choice - I usually go with lavender, but lemon is a great choice here too. Fill the spray bottle with 1 cup of water, add 1/4 cup of witch hazel, and 10-20 drops of essential oil. Shake to mix thoroughly, and spray wherever you need a bit of freshness! This also makes a great pillow/linens spray.
3. Drawer Fresheners
- No matter how clean the house is, there’s always a lingering musty smell in drawers. So annoying. I’ve found a great and easy method of fixing this: grab 2-3 cotton balls per drawer (depending on drawer size) and add two drops of essential oil to each cotton ball. Place the cotton balls in your drawers and you’ll soon notice how good your clothing smells!
