In the latter part of the 1980s, NASA looked into to the effects of indoor plants to see if they would clean the air in tightly-sealed space stations.


The good news is, you can take advantage of their findings in your home.


NASA found that it’s true, that houseplants do actually enhance indoor air quality. They take in some of the harmful chemicals that out-gas from building materials. Some plant varieties are much better at this than others. To derive all the benefits from the cleansing actions of your houseplants, you will need a minimum of one plant for every 100 square feet of living space.


Below is a list of some air purifying plants that are the most effective at cleansing indoor air.

  • English ivy (Hedera helix) is well known to many as a landscape plant. It also succeeds indoors. It looks especially good in hanging designplans

  • Bamboo or reed palm (Chamaedorea sefritzii) is fond of humidity, so think about putting it in a washroom window. You can likewise give it a misting with water each day
  • Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) is in fact a tree that will grow indoors. You may find it trained as a bonsai in a standard pot. It’s another favorite you see in shopping areas
